Bath and North East Somerset Conservative Group News

Latest News:

October 2005

From Francine Haeberling, Leader of the Conservative Group

Councillors on the B&NES Conservative group are working hard for local residents on a variety of issues. In Midsomer Norton and Radstock, we

are fighting to guarantee local nature reserve status for an area of green land between Somervale School and the Station. Our councillors are also campaigning for the Council to provide a Tourist Information Centre in the town. We are also help local residents lobby for a pedestrian crossing on a busy route to school on North Road. In Keynsham and Saltford, our councillors are battling against the unelected, self-styled South West Regional Assembly who want to build at least 15,400 houses in our area and concrete over green belt land. We have also been successful in getting the completion of the Avon Ring Road south of Bristol included in a high level transport study, although there is still a long way to go to get the link built. Our Keynsham councillors are now conducting surgeries in the town centre to pick-up on more local issues of concern. In the rural areas, our councillors have been successful in securing improvements for rural playground equipment - particularly in West Harptree- and road safety measures on the A37, such as 30 mph flashing signs. With the Chew Valley Explorer bus service under threat from Government funding cuts, our local members whose wards are served by the bus are fighting for the best possible service keeping in close contact with local bus passengers.

April 2006

The B&NES Conservative group started a campaign to prevent the termination of the Post Office Card Account by the Government. We presented a motion to the Council calling upon the Government to rescind their decision and received dozens of letters and phone calls in support. Out councillors received very good press coverage, including on the front page of the Somerset Guardian. We continue to oppose the 92,500 houses being imposed upon our area by the unelected, self-styled South West Regional Assembly.

Most recently, we tried to get Labour and Lib-Dem councillors to endorse the abolition of regional assemblies across the country but were defeated. Our councillors in Keynsham successfully won a campaign for fairer bus fares to Bath and are fighting train cuts from the local station. In Midsomer Norton and Radstock, we are funding an extra Dial-a-Ride bus and improvements for disabled access in the town. Rurally, Parish Councils have claimed £70,000 worth of investment we secured to improve the condition of playground equipment.
