Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Conservative Parliamentary candidate for North East Somerset, has been a long time supporter of the Royal British Legion in Somerset. It is the nation’s leading charity for the armed forces, and does a huge amount locally to give comfort and practical support to those many ex-servicemen and women in our Region. People will be familiar with their annual Poppy Day appeal and Armistice Day parades in our local towns and villages.
Jacob was delighted to meet representatives from the Royal British Legion at last week’s Conservative Party Conference where the Legion unveiled its manifesto for the next General Election in which it sought a commitment from prospective MPs to “do their bit”. Jacob promised the Legion his support to achieve its aims to be able to help the whole Armed Forces family.
Jacob said: “Since 1945 there has only been one year (1968) when no British warrior has been killed in action. In 2009 there are many brave young men and women from Somerset who are risking their lives in Afghanistan and elsewhere for Queen and country. The new Government must support them more positively and practically than in the past. All MPs must hold them to that task and I will try to do my bit to help the Legion’s work in looking after all service families.”
